Our production for songwriters course was created with the idea of sharing the tools for creating songs from start to finish by yourself. The teachers are real singer-songwriters and have released records they produced, mixed & mastered themselves from start to finish.

Course Outline

Lesson 1 - Pre-production, Planning & Session Startup

• Discuss song structure / lyrics / motifs

• Create session & discuss file management

• Played by yourself vs. hired musicians

• Decide BPM & create click track

• Real vs. virtual drummer

Lesson 2 - Create Percussion Track

• Create tempo / markers

• Make basic percussion track

• Add auxiliary recorded percussion if desired

Lesson 3 - Record Basic Tracks

• Choose audio gear & track acoustic / bass guitar depending on feel

• Record complete performance or use duplicate tracks / takes

• Make sure fades are smooth

• Choose audio gear & track acoustic / bass

• Record complete performance or use duplicate tracks / takes

Lesson 5 - Record Vocals

• Choose audio gear & track voice

• Doubling lead parts

• Adding harmony & other background vocal elements

Lesson 6 - Record Aux. Instruments

• Add guitar & piano leads / textures

• Add more percussion / record real drums

Lesson 7 - Record Aux Instruments 2

• Add guitar & piano leads / textures

Lesson 8 - Mixing

• Create groups / edit audio

• Tune vocals / instruments if needed

• Start with volume & pan to create generic mix

• EQ & compression

Lesson 9 - Mixing 2

• Create reverb / delay sends & discuss choices

• Reference mix with audio track of desired sound

• Bounce mix & listen on multiple systems

• Discuss bouncing for mastering

Lesson 10 - Mastering & Delivery

• Discuss mastering with stock pro tools vs. purchased plugins

• Master EQ, compression & stereo width

• Discuss dithering for final distribution
