Beyond the Classroom: CSML Lessons Taken To The Street

Throughout the CSML experience, in addition to the in-depth lessons that occur one-on-one between our students and instructors, we make an effort to extend opportunities to our students, working on real sessions with our clients. Lately, we have had some awesome experiences with our current students.  It has been fun to see their growth applied in a working environment as they’ve been showing us what they have learned, demonstrating their ability to translate it to real world situations.

CSML is structured in a way for our students to gain exposure to the industry in a comfortable and safe studio environment with our instructors, giving them plenty of time to learn at their own pace and explore whatever interests them.  From there, we help facilitate working experiences to take what they have learned and put it into practice.  Here are some recent highlights on the kind of sessions we have had our students join us for.

We recently had our students Jay and Nikolas sit in with us for our Swallow Hill Music adult band showcase in Studio W.  They helped us with everything from setting up microphones, to guiding guests, as well as getting the chance to mix live.  Although they were hesitant to get behind the console, they did a great job while in control of the sound.

Following our Swallow Hill Music showcase, we had School of Rock Broomfield come in to showcase their adult bands as well.  We invited Jay to come back to help out on this event and it was great seeing Jay’s confidence build just between the Swallow Hill showcase and this one.  He did a great job, already catching on to the ins and outs of how a live performance is put together and executed.

Most recently, we had Nikolas come in to assist with audio playback and light cues for a music video shoot.  He learned digital routing, audio/video playback, monitor routing, as well as working with our clients one on one.  Nik did a great job and we look forward to having him on more video sessions in the future!

It’s super cool to see our students take things they have learned from their lessons and apply them in real working scenarios, as well as learning from the sessions and being able to take that with them. As an intern, I don’t spend as much time with the students getting to know them, so times like these are great as I can get to know our students, learn what their goals are with audio production, and get more insight from a student’s perspective on CSML.

“The Behringer x32 and setup is the perfect way to practice for real world application. Nick and Justin are so hands on and patient. Their experience is amazingly helpful! I have so many real world applications I can draw on now. This can go a long way when learning new things. I’m a hands-on learner so Studio W is exactly what I needed.”

“Being invited to help with the sessions was a great learning experience as I got to learn how live productions are set up and see the difference in environments between the studio and a live setting. It’s also very nice to be trusted, and better yet expected as a student to want to try mixing a band in front of a live audience. CSML really pushes me to be creative, and to get out of my comfort zone while teaching how each genre of music is mixed and what the professional standard is!”
